Michelle’s book READING WITH PATRICK, published by Penguin Random House in 2017, explores racism, incarceration, and education in the United States. The runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and the Goddard Riverside Stephan Russo Book Prize for Social Justice, her book was selected as a community reads pick at a number of libraries, colleges, and universities across the United States, including Yale Prison Education, University of Iowa, New York Public Library, Ann Arbor Public Library, and more. Reading with Patrick has been released in Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and the U.K. In 2017, Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture listed READING WITH PATRICK as a recommended book.
As Michelle put it in the New York Times, her book is “an intimate story about the failure of the education and criminal justice systems and the legacy of slavery; about how literature is for everyone, how books connect people, and the hope that with enough openness and generosity we can do the hard work of knowing each other and ourselves.” Michelle is currently working on her second book.
Michelle graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College, received a masters degree at Cambridge University on a Harvard-Knox Fellowship, and a law degree at Harvard Law School. Among her honors are the Skadden Fellowship, awarded to thirty law school graduates across the United States for public service, and the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship, awarded to thirty New Americans across the United States for fully funded graduate study. Michelle writes for public outlets, including the New York Times, the Guardian, Paris Review, New York Review of Books, Public Books, Los Angeles Review of Books, The Point, and other publications.
The daughter of Taiwanese immigrants to the United States, Michelle is currently based in Taiwan.
